Softball ends season at Concordia

Jenna Clark
The St. Kate's softball team wrapped up their 2009 season with a pair of 5-1 losses to Concordia College. The losses drop the Wildcats to 10-12 in conference play and into a three-way tie for fifth place in the conference standings.

In game one the Cobbers used a pair of singles and a two-run home run in the bottom of the third inning to take a 3-0 lead.  From there the Wildcats offense struggled to put together any significant threats. In fact, they managed only three hits in the game.

Two of the Wildcats hits came from Jenna Clark. The starting second baseman also accounted  for the team's lone run when she hit her second home run of the season in the top of the fifth inning.

Game two started out as a great pitching dual. After four complete innings of play there were only two hits in the entire game.

Concordia was the first to take advantage of their opportunity though. They grabbed the 1-0 lead by moving their lone base runner around the paths with old-fashioned small ball. After a leadoff single they followed with a sacrifice bunt, a stolen base and a sacrifice fly to drive in the game's first run.

The Wildcats quickly responded in the top of the fifth when Kaitlyn Frank singled to start the inning. She went to second on a wild pitch, was moved to third on a sac fly by Katie Allen. Frank then came around to tie the game on Beth Freier's RBI single.

After playing the back-and-forth game, things came apart for St. Kate's in the bottom of the fifth. Concordia scored four runs on four hits and a St. Kate's error to secure the 5-1 win.

The Wildcats conclude their season with a 10-12 conference record and 12-23 record overall.
